Detroit Lions coaches are starting to see a clear trend ā opponents are coming into every game with one mission: slow down Jameson Williams.
Williamsā speed has become such a problem for opposing defenses that coordinators are crafting entire game plans around neutralizing him. Lions offensive staff revealed that defenses are adjusting coverages, shading safeties to his side, and even disguising zone looks to keep him from burning them deep.
āTeams know what kind of threat Jameson is,ā one assistant said. āTheyāre making sure he doesnāt get behind them ā which, of course, opens things up for everyone else.ā
While Williamsā stat lines might not always show it, his impact is being felt across the field. By drawing double coverage and forcing defenses to play cautious, heās creating room for Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sam LaPorta, and the running backs to thrive underneath.
Head coach Dan Campbell noted that the next step for Williams is learning to adjust when teams try to take away his best weapon ā his speed. āHeās starting to recognize how theyāre playing him,ā Campbell said. āNow itās about using that to his advantage.ā
The Lions see this as a sign of respect. When defenses plan around you, it means they fear you ā and thatās exactly the kind of problem Detroitās offense wants to keep creating.
