The New York Mets arenāt playing it safe this seasonāand we love to see it.
With the trade deadline heating up, the Mets made a serious statement by acquiring All-Star closer Ryan Helsley from the St. Louis Cardinals. In exchange, they sent over a promising package of prospects: shortstop Jesus Baez, and right-handers Nate Dohm and Frank Elissalt.
Letās just say: this is not a move you make if youāre just hoping to finish .500.
š§Ø A Big Arm for a Big Moment
Ryan Helsley isnāt just any bullpen pickup. The guy led all of Major League Baseball with 49 saves in 2024 and posted a ridiculous 1.83 ERA across three seasons from 2022 to 2024. This year? A solid 3.00 ERA over 36 innings, with 21 saves to his nameādespite playing on a struggling Cardinals squad.
At 31 and in the final year of his deal, Helsley fits the āwin-nowā vibe perfectly. And with Mets relievers like A.J. Minter and Dedniel Núñez lost to season-ending injuries, his arrival couldnāt come at a better time.
š§± Building the Wall: Diaz + Helsley = š
Hereās the real kicker: Helsley isnāt even closing games in New York. Heās expected to work behind Edwin Diaz, giving the Mets one of the most intimidating 1-2 bullpen punches in baseball.
Imagine being a hitter in the 8th and 9th innings at Citi Field: 100 mph gas, elite off-speed, and zero breathing room. Thatās the Mets’ planāand it just might work.
š§āš³ Cooking for October
This deal is the second bullpen move of the day for the Mets, who also picked up Tyler Rogers from the Giants. Clearly, front office brass isnāt just hoping to stay competitiveātheyāre expecting to play deep into October.
Now, itās up to the guys on the field to make that vision a reality.
