10 TDs and Out? Lions Rookie RB Faces Surprise Roster Snub

When Production Doesn’t Equal Protection

You’d think scoring 10 touchdowns in a single season would buy you at least a shot at making an NFL roster. But for rookie running back Kye Robichaux, that might not be enough to avoid the chopping block in Detroit.

Coming off a strong final season at Boston College where he punched in nearly all of his scores from short range, Robichaux seemed like a perfect fit for goal-line duty in the NFL. He’s a 5’11, 209-pound bowling ball who doesn’t shy away from contact. In a league that values versatility and grit, you’d expect a guy like that to carve out a niche role—especially for a team like the Detroit Lions, who pride themselves on physicality.

But NFL reality is cold and calculated.

The Numbers Game in Detroit

Detroit’s backfield already features Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery—arguably one of the best 1-2 punches in the league. Add in versatile backs like Sione Vaki and veteran Craig Reynolds, both of whom contribute heavily on special teams, and the room starts to feel very full.

And in that room? There’s not a lot of space for a “maybe.”

Robichaux, despite his production and potential, is currently projected to be on the outside looking in, according to SI.com’s Vito Chirco. Instead, it’s fellow undrafted rookie Anthony Tyus III who seems to be ahead on the depth chart.

Power Runner, But Is That Enough?

Make no mistake: Robichaux brings something different to the table. His short-yardage success was elite at the college level—six of his seven touchdowns in 2023 came from inside the five-yard line. In a league where finishing drives is everything, that’s no small skill.

But with the Lions trending toward hybrid fullback-tight end options and using guys like Malcolm Rodriguez in creative roles, there may not be room for a designated “power back” on the roster.

Don’t Count Him Out Just Yet

The upside? Robichaux’s style and determination haven’t gone unnoticed. Analysts love his motor. Coaches love players who embrace contact. And fans? They’re always down for a good underdog story.

Even if Robichaux doesn’t make the initial 53-man roster, a practice squad spot is very much in play—and all it takes is one injury or roster shuffle to call his number.

So yeah, it’s possible the guy with 10 touchdowns gets cut before the season starts. But don’t be surprised if he finds his way back—maybe even with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove.
