The NFL’s legal tampering period is in full swing, and the Detroit Lions are already feeling the impact of early free-agent moves across the league.
Lions’ Secondary Shake-Up
Detroit lost cornerback Carlton Davis to the New England Patriots on a three-year, $60 million deal. In response, they quickly pivoted to sign D.J. Reed from the Jets, locking him in on a three-year, $48 million contract. However, their interest in Paulson Adebo was thwarted when he signed with the Giants for $54 million. Meanwhile, Darius Slay, who had shown interest in a Detroit reunion, landed in Pittsburgh instead.
NFC North Rivals Making Moves
The Bears reshaped their offensive line, adding center Drew Dalman, Jonah Jackson, and Joe Thuney to protect their expected rookie quarterback, Caleb Williams. They also signed DT Grady Jarrett.
The Packers bolstered their line by signing guard Aaron Banks to a four-year, $77 million deal.
The Vikings officially moved on from Sam Darnold, clearing the way for J.J. McCarthy to start in 2025.
Commanders Reload for 2025
The team that ended Detroit’s playoff run is gearing up for another push. Washington signed DT Javon Kinlaw to a $45 million deal, traded for OT Laremy Tunsil, and added Deebo Samuel to give Jayden Daniels another weapon.
What’s Next for Detroit?
The Lions could still be in the market for another cornerback after missing on Adebo and Slay. They also need to bolster their pass rush, with Levi Onwuzurike still on the market and the potential to pursue a veteran like Trey Hendrickson.
As free agency unfolds, Detroit will have to keep adjusting to stay ahead in the NFC North race.
