2025 NFC North Free Agency Preview: Biggest Needs & Top Targets

The Detroit Lions are entering free agency with a clear mission: bolster the pass rush and build on last season’s success. While Detroit’s defense made strides, their inability to generate consistent pressure down the stretch proved costly. Now, with ample cap space, the Lions have a golden opportunity to land a game-changing edge rusher to pair with Aidan Hutchinson and take their defense to the next level.

Two potential targets stand out: Khalil Mack and Josh Sweat. Mack, a proven veteran, continues to dominate as a pass rusher, while Sweat offers a younger, high-upside option with explosive athleticism. Either player would instantly upgrade Detroit’s front seven and create one of the most feared pass-rush duos in the NFL.

But the Lions’ free agency plan doesn’t stop there. They also have several exclusive-rights free agents (ERFAs) to retain, including Connor Galvin, Michael Niese, Mitchell Agude, and Trevor Nowaske. These players provide depth and special teams value, and re-signing them is a cost-effective way to maintain roster stability.

With free agency kicking off on March 10, the Lions are in position to be aggressive and make a serious push toward contention. Whether they land a marquee edge rusher or focus on reinforcing their depth, this offseason will play a key role in shaping Detroit’s Super Bowl aspirations.
