Detroit Looks to Bolster Pass Rush Ahead of 2025 Season
The Detroit Lions’ 2024 season exposed a glaring need—more firepower on defense, particularly in the trenches. As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, experts are largely in agreement: Detroit is likely to target an edge rusher to complement Aidan Hutchinson.
With the draft just weeks away, speculation is ramping up. Holding the No. 28 overall pick, the Lions could stay put or, in typical Brad Holmes fashion, move around the board. But regardless of their positioning, one name continues to surface—Texas A&M’s Nic Scourton.
A Defensive Priority for the Lions
Hutchinson’s late-season injury left the Lions struggling to generate pressure, a weakness that proved costly in both their loss to the Buffalo Bills and their playoff exit against the Washington Commanders. Detroit needs reinforcements, and Scourton appears to fit the bill.
The former Purdue standout transferred to Texas A&M for his final collegiate season, where he faced stiffer competition in the SEC. While his numbers dipped slightly, he still posted five sacks and earned First-Team All-SEC honors. Across his college career, he amassed 17 sacks, 31 tackles for loss, and three forced fumbles.
One draft analyst emphasized that Scourton “wasn’t as productive as you’d expect from someone with his physical profile, but all of the tools are there for him to be a high-quality pro, and an ideal fit for what Detroit needs.”
Other Potential Picks
While many mock drafts project an edge rusher, some experts believe the Lions could go in a different direction. Here are a few alternate possibilities:
- Derrick Harmon, DT, Oregon – A Detroit native, Harmon was one of college football’s most disruptive pass rushers in 2024. His versatility and ability to play across the defensive line make him an intriguing option.
- Tre Harris, WR, Ole Miss – Detroit could opt to strengthen their offense, giving Jared Goff another reliable target. Harris would provide consistency opposite Amon-Ra St. Brown.
- Benjamin Morrison, CB, Notre Dame – If the Lions look to shore up their secondary, Morrison could be a viable selection. His instincts and ball skills have drawn praise from scouts.
A Draft Decision with Playoff Implications
Detroit has made massive strides in recent seasons, but a stronger defensive front could be the missing piece in their Super Bowl aspirations. Whether it’s Scourton or another top prospect, the Lions’ first-round choice will be crucial in shaping their future.
