The first wave of free agency always brings big changes, and that has certainly been the case for the Detroit Lions. While general manager Brad Holmes has stayed relatively disciplined compared to other teams, Detroit still made moves that reshaped parts of the roster.
And like every offseason, some players clearly benefited from the Lions’ decisions — while others may have seen their situations become more uncertain.
Here are three early winners and two losers from Detroit’s first wave of free agency.
🟢 Winner #1: Isiah Pacheco
One of the biggest offseason headlines was Detroit adding running back Isiah Pacheco. The move instantly puts him in position to become a major contributor in the Lions’ offense.
Pacheco’s aggressive running style fits perfectly with the identity that head coach Dan Campbell wants his team to embody. His arrival also gives Detroit another explosive weapon who can keep defenses honest.
If he performs the way many expect, Pacheco could quickly become a fan favorite in Detroit.
🟢 Winner #2: Aidan Hutchinson
Star edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson also comes out of the first wave of free agency looking like a winner.
While the Lions didn’t land a blockbuster pass rusher, several defensive moves were aimed at improving the depth around him. Even incremental improvements along the defensive front could help Hutchinson avoid constant double teams.
That could open the door for another monster season.
🟢 Winner #3: Jared Goff
Quarterback Jared Goff continues to benefit from the Lions’ long-term strategy.
Detroit restructured his contract earlier in the offseason, creating salary cap flexibility while reinforcing the team’s commitment to him as the franchise quarterback. That move also gives the front office more resources to continue building a competitive roster around him.
In short, Goff remains firmly at the center of Detroit’s Super Bowl window.
🔴 Loser #1: The Lions’ Pass Rush Depth
Even with a few defensive additions, Detroit’s pass rush depth still raises questions.
Losing players like Al-Quadin Muhammad means the Lions must now rely on younger players or future additions to replace that production. Until another proven edge rusher arrives, the defensive front remains one of the biggest question marks on the roster.
🔴 Loser #2: Offensive Line Stability
The Lions’ offensive line — once considered one of the most stable units in the league — has experienced some turbulence this offseason.
With longtime tackle Taylor Decker no longer in the picture, Detroit has had to explore replacements and depth options. While players like Larry Borom and Cade Mays add flexibility, it may take time before the line regains the same level of stability it once had.
🏈 The Bottom Line
The first wave of free agency has been relatively calm for the Detroit Lions, but it still produced clear winners and losers.
Some players gained bigger opportunities, others lost key teammates, and a few roster questions remain unanswered. As free agency continues and the draft approaches, Detroit still has time to address those concerns and strengthen its push toward another championship run. 🦁
