The San Francisco 49ers might soon add a familiar NFL name to their coaching staff. According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the team is planning to interview former Pro Bowl cornerback DeAngelo Hall for the vacant defensive backs coach position.
Hall, 41, has coaching experience, having served as an assistant DBs coach for the Carolina Panthers last season. However, he and the Panthers mutually decided to part ways this offseason, as Hall is seeking a primary position coaching role.
A former first-round pick in the 2004 NFL Draft (No. 8 overall), Hall enjoyed a successful 14-year playing career. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 2005 and 2006 with the Atlanta Falcons and earned another Pro Bowl nod in 2010 while with Washington. He also had a brief stint with the Oakland Raiders before retiring in 2017.
The 49ers are currently without a dedicated defensive backs coach. Assistant coach Daniel Bullocks handles dual responsibilities as a passing game specialist and DBs coach. Bringing in Hall could help strengthen a coaching staff that recently welcomed back a high-profile defensive coach.
After finishing 6-11 and missing the playoffs this past season, San Francisco is clearly focused on improving its defense. Adding Hall to the coaching mix could provide valuable experience and fresh perspective to their secondary.
If hired, Hall’s experience as a standout NFL cornerback and recent coaching background would make him an intriguing addition to the 49ers’ coaching staff. Fans will be watching closely to see if this move materializes.
