Could Aaron Glenn Bring These 5 Lions Free Agents to the Jets in 2025?
With a new era dawning for the New York Jets in 2025, there’s a lot of speculation about which players Head Coach Aaron Glenn might target in free agency. Glenn, who’s made a name for himself as the defensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions, is expected to overhaul the roster and bring in familiar faces — guys he’s coached before in Detroit.
Here are five Detroit Lions free agents Glenn could look to sign to help the Jets turn things around and break their 14-year playoff drought.
1. Marcus Davenport, DE
The Jets need a serious upgrade on their defensive line, and Marcus Davenport could be a perfect fit. When healthy, Davenport has been a beast off the edge. He posted nine sacks in just 11 games in 2021 and was a major part of the New Orleans Saints defense before injuries slowed him down. With Glenn’s prior experience coaching Davenport, he might be willing to take a chance on him to boost the Jets’ pass rush.
2. Derrick Barnes, LB
Derrick Barnes is a player who knows Glenn’s system well, having played under him in Detroit since 2021. Barnes was a versatile linebacker for the Lions and even stepped into a pass-rush role when needed. Although his 2024 season ended early due to a knee injury, his potential is undeniable. At just 25, he’s young, talented, and could bring much-needed depth to the Jets’ linebacker corps.
3. Levi Onwuzurike, DT
Levi Onwuzurike had a breakout season in 2024 after a string of injuries earlier in his career. The Jets need help on the interior of their defensive line, and Onwuzurike could step in and fill that void. His ability to rush the passer from the inside could complement the Jets’ defensive scheme well, and his familiarity with Glenn’s system makes him a natural fit.
4. Carlton Davis, CB
The Jets could be in the market for a cornerback this offseason, especially with D.J. Reed likely heading out in free agency. Enter Carlton Davis. The Lions’ cornerback has been excellent in Glenn’s man-heavy defense, and the Jets could use his skills to shore up their secondary. While Davis will have plenty of suitors, Glenn’s connection with him could be the deciding factor in landing him.
5. Ifeatu Melifonwu, SAF
Melifonwu has shown flashes of brilliance as a safety in Detroit, especially after switching from cornerback. He played all 17 games in 2023 and was one of the league’s top-rated safeties. The only question with Melifonwu has been his injury history, but at just 25 years old, he still has a ton of upside. If the Jets want a versatile player in their secondary, Melifonwu could be a great option especially given his familiarity with Glenn.
These are just a few of the players who could reunite with Aaron Glenn in New York. While the Jets have some financial hurdles to clear, don’t be surprised if Glenn brings in a couple of familiar faces to help turn the franchise around in 2025.
What do you think, Jets fans? Who would you love to see join the squad from the Lions?
