5 Lions Who Could Be Playing Their Way Into (or Out of) Detroit in 2025

The Detroit Lions have built something special under GM Brad Holmes and coach Dan Campbell — not just with talent, but with players who fit the culture. But as the franchise locks down its core (Jared Goff, Penei Sewell, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and others), the reality is they can’t keep everyone. With a handful of key contracts expiring after this season, some players are about to enter full-on prove-it mode in 2025.

Here are five Lions looking to earn their next deal — either in Detroit or elsewhere:

1. WR Jameson Williams
The Lions picked up Williams’ fifth-year option, but a long-term extension is still on hold. After a breakout 2024 that had its share of highlights and off-field noise, Jamo enters 2025 with something to prove. The talent is obvious — now it’s about consistency and maturity. With the WR market booming, a strong season could push Williams into a major payday.

2. LB Alex Anzalone
Now a defensive captain, Anzalone has proven his value. But at age 30 and entering the final year of his deal, he may need to show once again why he’s irreplaceable — especially with younger options waiting in the wings. If he stays healthy and productive, it’ll be hard for Detroit to let him walk.

3. DT Levi Onwuzurike
Finally healthy, Onwuzurike had his best season yet in 2024, even flashing some pass rush from both inside and out. The back surgery that nearly ended his career seems in the rearview — but he needs another solid year to prove he can be counted on long term.

4. CB Amik Robertson
A late-season standout in 2024, Robertson showed his value in multiple roles before an injury ended his playoff run. Now healthy again, he enters a contract year with plenty of motivation. If he keeps playing like he did late last season, he’ll cash in — whether with Detroit or another team.

5. DE Marcus Davenport
The Lions took a gamble by bringing back Davenport after a season lost to injuries. He has the talent, but availability has been the big question throughout his career. If he can stay healthy and make an impact opposite Aidan Hutchinson, he might just revive his career — and earn another shot.

With contract talks heating up and expectations sky-high in Detroit, these five players are set to play with extra fire in 2025. One thing’s for sure: there’s no shortage of motivation in the Lions’ locker room this season.
