Trump Team Puts Green Cards on Hold for Stricter Background Checks

The Trump administration has hit the brakes on processing some green card applications, saying they need more time for vetting. This move follows an executive order President Trump signed in January, which calls for stricter screening of immigrants coming into or already in the U.S.

As first reported by CBS News, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has quietly halted certain green card applications, particularly affecting immigrants who gained entry through refugee or asylum status. These groups already undergo years of rigorous background checks, medical screenings, and interviews before they even set foot in the U.S.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the pause, stating it’s meant to check for possible fraud, public safety risks, or national security concerns. However, they didn’t say how long this delay will last.

For many immigrants who have already gone through a tough screening process, this unexpected hold-up could mean months   or even years   of uncertainty. The move is in line with Trump’s ongoing efforts to tighten legal immigration policies, fulfilling one of his campaign promises.
