Lions’ Leader or Letdown? Jared Goff’s Super Bowl Challenge

The Detroit Lions have been under a lot of pressure lately, and it’s only getting more intense. In 2023, they proved they were among the NFC’s best, nearly knocking out the 49ers in the NFC Championship. That raised expectations for 2024, and they delivered in the regular season with an impressive 15-2 record. But when it mattered most, they fell short, getting eliminated in their first playoff game. Now, with 2025 on the horizon, the pressure is back—and a lot of it is on quarterback Jared Goff.

CBS Sports’ Jeff Kerr ranked Goff fourth on a list of quarterbacks under the most pressure to win a Super Bowl, behind Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson, and Josh Allen. Goff has been to the big game before—he led the Rams to the Super Bowl in 2018. But that game was rough. He completed just 19 of 38 passes, threw an interception, and his team only managed three points in a 13-3 loss to the Patriots. After that, a lot of the blame fell on him.

Since joining the Lions, though, Goff has shown he’s a much better quarterback than the one who struggled in that Super Bowl. The only reason the pressure is on him now is because he’s turned the Lions into legit contenders. When the next playoffs roll around, he’ll need to avoid a repeat of his three-interception game against the Commanders. But with three straight seasons of over 4,000 passing yards and a fifth-place finish in MVP voting last season, he’s given fans plenty of reasons to believe that was just a bad day.

Before Goff gets another shot at a Super Bowl, he’ll have to battle through a tough NFC North and a competitive playoff field. But make no mistake—Detroit has one goal in 2025, and that’s bringing home that Lombardi Trophy.
