The New York Giants made waves when they signed Russell Wilson to a one-year, $10.5 million deal—just days after bringing in Jameis Winston on a two-year, $8 million contract. They even had talks with Aaron Rodgers, though it looks like he’s leaning toward either joining the Steelers or retiring.
Despite adding both Wilson and Winston (plus keeping backup Tommy DeVito), many believe the Giants are still eyeing a quarterback with their No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft. Names like Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart, and Tyler Shough are all in the conversation.
For Winston, his situation changed fast. One minute, he seemed like the presumptive starter; the next, he’s likely the backup and maybe even a mentor if the team drafts a young QB. But he knew what he was signing up for.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Winston told reporters when asked if he was aware of Wilson joining before he signed. “I knew they’d bring in another free agent or maybe even draft a guy. But that’s their business. My business is today, and today I get the privilege of being a Giant.”
Both Wilson and Winston have plenty of starting experience and both have had their ups and downs. Some analysts see them as insurance for each other, in case one struggles. Wilson has already said he believes he’s the starter, but Winston isn’t just rolling over. He thinks there’s still a chance to compete for the job.
New York is expected to have Wilson ahead of Winston on the depth chart when training camp starts, but Winston made it clear he’s ready for whatever comes next.
“My role was explained to me as: there’s an opportunity at the quarterback position, and we’re looking to improve it,” he said. “I signed up for that because I want to get better and be my best self.
“I didn’t get a defined role because I’ve played every role already. I’ve been a starter, a backup, a mentor you name it. So, I’m ready for anything.”
