Dan Campbell Believes Jared Goff Can Take Even More Control of Lions’ Offense
Jared Goff has already established himself as a key leader for the Detroit Lions, but head coach Dan Campbell believes the veteran quarterback can take his command of the offense to an even higher level in 2025. Speaking at the NFL’s annual meetings, Campbell praised Goff’s growth and indicated that the team wants him to have an even bigger role in shaping the offense moving forward.
“He’s taken a big step for us, but I think there’s still more,” Campbell said. “We want him to really own this offense—to take full control and be that guy who has complete command out there.”
Goff, who is coming off another strong season, has already proven he can run offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s system at a high level. He led the Lions to their first NFC Championship Game appearance in over three decades, throwing for over 4,500 yards and 30 touchdowns in the process. But Campbell believes there’s room for even more growth, particularly when it comes to on-field adjustments, audibles, and his influence over the game plan.
“The next step is just taking total ownership,” Campbell continued. “We want him to have that Peyton Manning, Drew Brees-type control, where he sees things before they happen and has the freedom to make changes as needed.”
The Lions have built a strong supporting cast around Goff, including a dominant offensive line, emerging star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, and a formidable run game led by Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery. With all of those weapons in place, the coaching staff believes Goff can elevate both his own game and the offense as a whole.
As Goff enters the final year of his contract, Detroit’s commitment to him remains a major talking point. While extension discussions are expected, Campbell’s comments suggest the team sees him as their long-term leader. If Goff continues to evolve and take more control of the offense, 2025 could be the year he cements himself as one of the league’s top quarterbacks.
