On Sunday, Pride of Detroit talked about the best moves the Lions made this offseason. But now it’s time to flip the script and look at the worst one and yeah, fans definitely have opinions.
One of the biggest criticisms so far? The Lions didn’t really upgrade their defensive line. Aside from bringing in backup nose tackle Roy Lopez, they’re mostly rolling with the same crew from last year. And sure, the defense was solid early in 2024, but betting big on guys like Marcus Davenport staying healthy, Josh Paschal being more consistent, and Alim McNeill bouncing back from injury is a gamble.
So here’s the question of the day: what was Detroit’s worst offseason move?
Honestly, most of the moves weren’t awful or risky. But the lack of moves that might be the problem. The team didn’t add much to the interior pass rush, and with McNeill likely missing the start of the season, there’s a real concern about how they’ll get pressure up the middle. DJ Reader and Roy Lopez are more focused on stopping the run and probably won’t even be on the field for key third-down plays. Onwuzurike might be part of the plan, but there’s not much depth behind him that feels reliable.
Lions GM Brad Holmes has hinted that Paschal might slide inside more, and sure, that could help but Paschal only has 5 sacks in three years and his pass rush grades from last season weren’t great. Maybe someone like Pat O’Connor or rookie Mekhi Wingo will surprise us, or maybe the team will target someone in the draft, but for now, that hole in the middle of the D-line feels like a missed opportunity.
So what do you think? What was Detroit’s worst offseason move or what move should they have made but didn’t?
