The Detroit Lions have made some solid moves this offseason, locking down key players from last year’s squad. But there are still a few decisions left to make one of the big ones being the fifth-year options for two recent first-round picks.
They have until May 1 to decide on whether to pick up the fifth-year option for Aidan Hutchinson and Jameson Williams. Hutchinson’s deal seems like a no-brainer, but the situation with Williams is a bit more complicated.
Williams, the former 12th overall pick, had a breakout year in 2024 with 58 catches, over 1,000 yards, and 7 touchdowns in 15 games. His fifth-year option would cost the Lions nearly $15.5 million for 2026, and while GM Brad Holmes has said it’s “likely” the team will pick it up, there’s still a lot to consider. The Lions like what they’ve seen from Williams but are also aware of his past injury and suspension issues, which is why they might want to take their time before locking him down for the long term.
There’s still three weeks left before the Lions have to make a call, and it’s going to be interesting to see if they choose to wait another year or decide to pull the trigger sooner.
