Trump’s Betting on a Breakthrough with China, White House Reveals

Trump Thinks a China Tariff Deal Is Still on the Table, Says White House

President Trump’s not giving up hope on making a deal with China, even as tensions ramp up. On Friday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump is still feeling “optimistic” about reaching an agreement on tariffs.

This came right after China announced a major hike in tariffs on U.S. goods    jumping from 84% all the way up to 125%. That’s a big move in the ongoing trade war, but Trump’s team says he’s open to talks.

Leavitt told reporters that Trump is ready to make a fair deal and warned that China wouldn’t benefit from continuing to retaliate. She said the U.S. economy is strong and that over 75 countries are reaching out to Trump’s team to work out their own trade deals.

When asked if Trump’s waiting for China to make the first move, Leavitt wouldn’t give details, but said national security staff are ready to get negotiations going and updates will come “in the effort of transparency.”

She also hinted that another deal with a different country might be close, though she didn’t name who.
