Former Ravens quarterback Josh Johnson is back for another NFL season and back in Washington. The 38-year-old veteran just signed a one-year deal with the Commanders, rejoining a team he briefly started for back in 2018.
Johnson spent the last two years with the Ravens, mostly as a backup to Lamar Jackson. He didn’t see much action though no snaps in 2023 and just a couple of passes last season in garbage time. Still, he was a steady veteran presence in the QB room, always ready if needed.
This move adds yet another chapter to Johnson’s wild football journey. The guy has now signed with 14 different NFL teams, along with stints in the AAF and XFL. He’s 1-8 as an NFL starter, but somehow keeps getting opportunities because of his experience and locker room value.
In Washington, he’ll likely be competing for the third-string job behind rookie Jayden Daniels and veteran Marcus Mariota. There’s also Sam Hartman in the mix. Johnson knows the Commanders organization well and has a connection with GM Adam Peters from their 49ers days, which probably helped land him this gig.
For Baltimore, Johnson’s departure was expected after the team brought in Cooper Rush to back up Lamar, with Devin Leary developing behind them.
Johnson might not make big headlines, but he’s the perfect example of a reliable third-string QB knows the system, stays sharp, and helps the team stay ready. If Washington needs him in 2025, you can bet he’ll be good to go.
