Lions Not Pressed to Draft a Tackle, But These 5 Could Still Be on Their Radar

The Detroit Lions head into the 2025 NFL Draft in a strong position at offensive tackle. Penei Sewell is playing at an All-Pro level, Taylor Decker just earned a Pro Bowl nod, and the team brought back veteran swing tackle Dan Skipper. They’re also hoping 2023 fourth-round pick Giovanni Manu makes a big leap in year two.

Still, with Decker approaching 32 and depth always important up front, Detroit could keep an eye on this year’s deep tackle class. It’s not a high priority, but if the right player falls into the right slot, adding another versatile lineman could make sense.

Here are five tackles who could interest the Lions:

1. Josh Simmons (Ohio State) – A seasoned starter with experience on both sides of the line. He’s smooth and fluid, but coming off a torn patellar tendon. Medicals will be key.

2. Josh Conerly Jr. (Oregon) – Gave up just one sack across nearly 500 pass-pro snaps last season. Anchored one of the best lines in the country and looks ready for NFL action.

3. Ozzy Trapilo (Boston College) – A massive 6-8 frame with NFL pedigree. He could step in right away as a swing tackle and compete for reps.

4. Aireontae Ersery (Minnesota) – The Big Ten’s best lineman in 2024. He’s got the size, length, and athleticism to hold his own quickly in the league.

5. Anthony Belton (N.C. State) – A 336-pound mauler in the run game with surprising feet. He’s still refining his pass protection but brings real upside.

Detroit might not spend an early pick on the position, but with their eye on the future and an emphasis on versatility, don’t be shocked if a lineman who can swing between guard and tackle ends up in the mix.
