The football world is grieving after the heartbreaking news that former LSU wide receiver and 2025 NFL Draft hopeful Kyren Lacy has died at just 24 years old.
Authorities in Harris County, Texas say Lacy died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase on Saturday night. The incident reportedly began with a call about a weapons disturbance involving Lacy and a family member. Police say Lacy discharged a weapon into the ground before fleeing in a vehicle. The chase ended in a crash, and initial reports indicate Lacy took his own life during the pursuit.
Detroit Lions cornerback Amik Robertson, a close friend of Lacy’s, took to Instagram to share the final text messages he received from him. The two had messaged on March 26, with Lacy writing, “Appreciate dat bro needed to hear dat!! They gone feel us!” Robertson responded, “YK it!”
Their messages go back even further—Robertson had reached out to Lacy in January, showing him support after Lacy was charged in connection to a deadly car accident in December that left a 78-year-old man dead. Lacy had been facing multiple charges, including negligent homicide and felony hit-and-run, and was out on bond awaiting a grand jury appearance scheduled for April 14.
Former teammates and fellow LSU athletes, including Ja’Marr Chase and Angel Reese, along with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, have all paid tribute to Lacy on social media. It’s a devastating loss for everyone who knew him—and a painful reminder of the mental and emotional battles athletes can face off the field.
