The New York Giants were beyond saving in 2024. No QB, no running back, not even divine intervention could fix their season. Around midseason, they made the call to release quarterback Daniel Jones and go full throttle on a tank job, hoping for the top pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
That’s when they turned to third-stringer Tommy DeVito over backup Drew Lock, who had previously started for the Denver Broncos. However, Lock is now returning to the Seattle Seahawks after just one year in New York, as reported by The Athletic.
Lock’s tenure in New York was largely forgettable, but he ended up starting the final five games of the season after DeVito got hurt. He managed a 1-4 record. That record contributed to the Giants finishing with one of the worst records in the league (3-14), just like the Titans and Browns, though the Titans snagged the No. 1 pick by tiebreaker.
Lock did pull off a huge Week 17 win over the Indianapolis Colts, throwing for 309 yards and five total touchdowns, but it wasn’t enough to secure the Giants’ coveted first overall pick. Had Lock not stepped up, they might’ve had their future quarterback in Cam Ward at No. 1.
After being traded to Seattle in the Russell Wilson deal, Lock had a chance to start in 2022 but lost out to Geno Smith. Now, the 28-year-old QB is back in Seattle, where he’s joined by new addition Sam Darnold as part of the Seahawks’ revamped QB room.
The Giants’ decision to start DeVito over Lock raised a lot of eyebrows, including Lock’s own. Despite his confusion, he handled the situation with professionalism, saying, “I’m still here for the team and DeVito. We’re still good friends.”
Looking back, it’s clear that the Giants’ organizational struggles are more than just a quarterback problem. As one NFL insider pointed out, there are deeper issues within the franchise. After all, the Giants have had only one winning season since 2017.
