Lions’ Cornerback Room Shakeup Could Lead to Veteran Trade

With the NFL Draft right around the corner, don’t be surprised if the Detroit Lions make a few unexpected moves — and one name to keep an eye on is veteran cornerback Amik Robertson.

According to FOX Sports’ Ralph Vacchiano, the Lions may look to trade Robertson, who’s entering the final year of a $9 million deal. It wouldn’t necessarily be a fan-favorite move, but there’s some sense behind it.

The cornerback room is suddenly crowded. Detroit brought in D.J. Reed to replace Carlton Davis and added Avonte Maddox in free agency. Combine that with last year’s top draft pick, Ennis Rakestraw Jr., and you’ve got multiple players who could push Robertson out of the nickel role he held last season.

Robertson has been steady — no question — but with his contract expiring and other talent on the rise, flipping him for draft capital could be an option. And in a pass-heavy league, a veteran slot corner with experience and toughness isn’t short on value.

It’s a tricky call. With a Super Bowl window open, depth matters. But if the Lions think Maddox or Rakestraw can handle that role, don’t be shocked if Robertson is dealt during draft weekend.

Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have shown they’ll make the hard calls if it helps the team win. This could be another one of them.
