The Detroit Lions are doing their homework on this year’s wide receiver class — and it could have implications for Jameson Williams’ future in Motown.
Texas standout Matthew Golden recently visited Detroit as part of the team’s top-30 visits, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Golden is coming off a breakout season after transferring from Houston, where he racked up nearly 1,000 yards and nine touchdowns. He also turned heads at the NFL Combine with a blazing 4.29-second 40-yard dash — speed that puts him in elite company.
Golden is considered one of the top receivers in the 2025 draft and could go in the first round. If the Lions want him, they might need to trade up from No. 28 to make it happen. And that’s where this gets interesting.
General manager Brad Holmes recently confirmed the team will pick up Jameson Williams’ fifth-year option, but he also admitted that keeping Williams long-term may not be financially feasible. Wide receivers are expensive, and Golden could offer Detroit a younger, cheaper option with top-tier upside.
Golden’s skillset — fluid route running, reliable hands, and game-breaking speed — makes him a perfect fit in Ben Johnson’s offense. Analysts have even compared him to Chris Olave, which tells you what kind of ceiling he might have in the NFL.
Bottom line: Williams isn’t out the door just yet, but if the Lions make a bold move to land Golden in the draft, it’ll be hard not to wonder what that means for Jamo’s future in Detroit.
