Lions Bolster D-Line with Georgia EDGE in New Mock from Kiper & Yates

The 2025 NFL Draft is creeping up fast, and ESPN’s Mel Kiper and Field Yates are making some noise with their newest three-round mock. In it, Kiper took the reins on all three of the Detroit Lions’ picks—and he might’ve nailed a few needs.

First up at No. 28 overall: Georgia’s Mykel Williams, a freakishly explosive edge rusher who could be the perfect partner-in-crime for Aidan Hutchinson. Kiper highlighted Detroit’s need to plug the hole opposite Hutch and said Williams has “even more upside” that new DC Kelvin Sheppard could unlock. Sounds like a guy who could shake things up from Day 1.

With the 60th pick, Kiper addressed another pressing concern—right guard. Detroit grabs Marcus Mbow from Purdue, a versatile lineman who’s played both guard and tackle. He could walk into camp with a legit shot to start, competing with guys like Kayode Awosika and Christian Mahogany.

And at pick No. 102? It’s Clemson linebacker Barrett Carter. With Alex Anzalone entering the final year of his deal and injuries piling up last season, Carter would give the linebacker group a much-needed boost. He’s coming off a strong campaign with 77 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and 9 pass breakups—plenty of juice to contribute early on.

This mock shows Kiper sees Detroit doubling down on defense, filling real needs with young, high-upside talent. And honestly, if things played out this way, Lions fans might have plenty to smile about by the end of draft weekend.
