Are the Giants Planning to Grab a Quarterback in Round 2? It Sure Looks Like It

The New York Giants stirred up some buzz recently when news came out that they were working out Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders. With the third pick in the draft, people started wondering if they were eyeing him for Round 1.

But truth is, Sanders seems to be sliding down draft boards lately. Insider Albert Breer doesn’t think the Browns or the Giants are taking him that early. Still, the Giants aren’t done doing their homework. They’re also checking out Louisville’s Tyler Shough and Alabama’s Jalen Milroe—more potential QB options.

So what does that mean? Well, it seems like New York might actually be planning to grab a quarterback in the second round (they’ve got pick No. 34). Most mock drafts have them taking Penn State’s Abdul Carter in the first round, and that would make sense—Carter is a beast on defense, and the Giants have invested a lot in their D-line lately.

Plus, with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston already on board after free agency, it’s unlikely the Giants go for a QB right at the top. Those guys are solid, but both have their issues—hence the short-term deals.

That’s why it makes more sense for the Giants to land a top defensive player like Carter or even Travis Hunter in Round 1, then turn around and draft a quarterback with high potential in Round 2. Someone like Milroe, who has crazy upside, or Sanders, who’s accurate and has that “it” factor, could be a smart long-term investment.

Bottom line: The Giants might be trying to pull off the perfect draft—snag a star defender early and then grab their QB of the future in Round 2. Not a bad plan.
