Alabama’s football defense is working hard to clean up its game, and it looks like that work is paying off. After a penalty-heavy 2024 season, the Tide made discipline a major focus this spring—and it showed.
Defensive coordinator Kane Wommack shared that Alabama only had five defensive penalties across three spring scrimmages, each with over 100 plays. That’s a huge improvement. Wommack was especially pleased that most of the penalties came from guys further down on the depth chart—not the main contributors.
“We’re playing smarter,” Wommack said. “Guys are sticking to their assignments, not trying to do too much, and staying away from dumb penalties.”
Alabama was one of the most penalized teams in 2024, so this progress is a big step forward. With a ton of returning talent, expectations are sky-high for the Tide defense in 2025—and if they keep this up, they’ll be tough to beat.
