Drake Says Super Bowl Censorship Proves His Defamation Case
Drake isn’t backing down in his legal fight with Universal Music Group (UMG). This week, he updated his lawsuit, claiming that the NFL censoring part of Kendrick Lamar’s track “Not Like Us” during the Super Bowl halftime show actually proves his point that the song is defamatory.
During the halftime show, the word “pedophile” was cut from Lamar’s performance, but everything else stayed in. Drake’s lawyers argue that this proves people know calling someone a “certified pedophile” is seriously damaging, even if UMG still puts out the uncensored version.
Drake originally filed his lawsuit in January, before Kendrick’s halftime show happened. But now, with that performance pulling in over 133 million viewers even more than the game itself Drake says the damage to his name has only gotten worse. Especially since the song won Record of the Year and Song of the Year at the Grammys soon after, putting it in front of even more people.
Though Lamar censored the one word, other jabs in the song like “Hey Drake, I hear you like ‘em young,”were still performed live. Drake’s updated complaint calls the show a “character assassination”and blames UMG for promoting it to massive audiences, knowing the harm it could cause him.
UMG’s lawyers fired back, calling the whole thing “frivolous and reckless”, accusing Drake’s team of wasting the court’s time after losing a rap battle and trying to cover it up with lawsuits. They say they’ll fight the claims in court if needed, adding that the case has no real chance of winning.
Legal experts say Drake’s going to have a tough time winning this one but either way, it’s keeping his public feud with Lamar in the spotlight.
