Lions GM Brad Holmes knows the world is expecting Detroit to target a defensive lineman or edge rusher in the upcoming draft—but don’t expect him to follow the crowd.
Speaking at his pre-draft press conference, Holmes made it clear: the Lions won’t draft based on perceived holes or fan speculation. Instead, they’ll stick to what’s worked—taking the best player available who fits the team’s culture and long-term vision. “We’re not going to reach on players just to fill a position,” Holmes said. “That’s what we don’t do.”
Yes, the Lions have legitimate needs, especially on the defensive front with injuries to key players like Alim McNeill and Mekhi Wingo, and with Marcus Davenport still an unknown. But Holmes isn’t going to panic. He acknowledged the strength of this year’s D-line class and didn’t rule out selecting a player at that position—but only if it makes sense for the Lions’ blueprint.
Holmes also hinted at the possibility of trading back, depending on how the board falls. But as usual, don’t expect the Lions to tip their hand. As Holmes put it, predicting the Lions’ draft plans is like trying to guess the plot of a movie before it starts: “Just grab the popcorn.”
