The Detroit Lions have built one of the most well-rounded rosters in the NFL, and wide receiver Jameson Williams has been a key piece of that puzzle. After all, he’s coming off his best season yet—58 catches, 1,001 yards, and 7 touchdowns. Paired with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Detroit’s got a pretty lethal one-two punch at wideout.
But that doesn’t mean Williams is untouchable.
According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, some around the league believe the Lions could explore trading the speedy receiver. With the deadline to pick up his fifth-year option approaching, the chatter around Williams is heating up. Breer dropped the nugget in his annual draft needs column, noting that Detroit might be looking to bolster its wide receiver room—and a Williams trade could be part of that shuffle.
To be fair, GM Brad Holmes did say at the league meetings in March that the team will “most likely” pick up Williams’ option. He even praised the young receiver, calling him “a tremendous player for us last year.” But Holmes didn’t shut the door on a trade either, which is why the speculation is sticking.
It’s also worth remembering that Williams, still only 24, has had a couple of suspensions—one in 2023 for violating the NFL’s gambling policy and another in 2024 tied to performance-enhancing substances. Whether that history factors into Detroit’s thinking is unclear, but it could be part of the broader evaluation as they weigh his long-term fit.
With the draft just around the corner, don’t be surprised if his name pops up in more rumors.
