Lions Release QB Jake Fromm Ahead of NFL Draft, Could Signal More Changes Coming

Just a day before the NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions have made a move in their quarterback room, releasing veteran Jake Fromm on April 23. Fromm had signed a reserve/future deal earlier this offseason but now finds himself searching for a new opportunity elsewhere in the league.

Fromm, a former fifth-round pick by the Buffalo Bills in 2020, had an unconventional path through the NFL. He initially joined Detroit midway through last year’s training camp and served as the team’s third-string quarterback. Before that, he bounced around between Buffalo and the New York Giants, even starting two games for the Giants in 2021.

This latest roster shakeup could be just the beginning. With Jared Goff locked in as the starter, eyes now turn to Hendon Hooker, who was drafted in the third round in 2023. Though Hooker has potential, Lions GM Brad Holmes recently made it clear the backup job won’t be handed to him. With Kyle Allen now on board and Hooker still trying to find consistency after rehabbing from a torn ACL, the competition is heating up.

Some around the league believe Hooker could even become a trade chip if he fails to secure the No. 2 spot behind Goff. One thing is certain: the Lions are serious about shoring up every part of their roster as they push for a deep playoff run.
