Heading into the 2025 NFL Draft, one rumor that just wouldn’t go away was the idea of the Detroit Lions trading wide receiver Jameson Williams. But GM Brad Holmes set the record straight — and he didn’t mince words.
Speaking after the Lions took Ohio State defensive tackle Tyleik Williams with the No. 28 overall pick, Holmes was asked directly about the swirling trade buzz around Jameson. His answer? A firm and clear no.
“That’s something we’ve never even entertained,” Holmes told reporters, via Detroit Free Press. “I don’t know where that report came from, but that’s not a conversation Dan [Campbell] and I have ever had.”
Williams is entering the 2025 season on a very team-friendly deal, with just a $2.6 million cap hit. That’s incredible value for a wideout who topped 1,000 yards last season, racking up 58 catches and seven touchdowns in 15 games (10 starts). Detroit also has the option to keep him around in 2026 with a fifth-year club option worth $15.4 million — and it sounds like the team is leaning toward picking that up.
Back in March, Holmes hinted that an extension wasn’t off the table but admitted wide receiver deals can get expensive — fast.
“There’s a lot of extensions we’re working on, and wide receiver is an expensive position,” he said. “But with Jameson, we’re still just taking it as it comes.”
With Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown on the outside, Jared Goff is surrounded by legit weapons. That duo also helps open up the run game for David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs — something Detroit wants to keep rolling in 2025.
Bottom line: the Lions like what they have in Jameson Williams, and the front office isn’t in any rush to break that up. Trade rumors? Nothing but noise.
