The Detroit Lions know the NFC North won’t be a walk in the park in 2025. Even after a big offseason and a solid roster core, the division is loaded with teams looking to make noise. But while Detroit has plenty of stability, not everyone else in the North can say the same — especially not the Green Bay Packers.
Detroit kept its core intact, with stars like Jared Goff, David Montgomery, Jahmyr Gibbs, Sam LaPorta, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and Jameson Williams all returning, along with a strong offensive line. At wide receiver, the Lions are rolling with a solid group featuring St. Brown, Williams, Tim Patrick, and Khalif Raymond — no drama, no confusion.
Green Bay? A different story entirely.
The Packers used two of their top picks on wide receivers Matthew Golden and Savion Williams, adding them to an already crowded room with Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, and Dontayvion Wicks. Instead of clearing things up, they’ve created more questions.
Watson is still recovering from injury and likely won’t be ready to start the season. Doubs, meanwhile, struggled with consistency last year and now enters a contract year. And while Wicks showed flashes in limited opportunities, he’ll once again be pushed down the depth chart with the new rookies arriving.
To make matters even messier, new running back Josh Jacobs has been vocal about the Packers’ need for a true No. 1 receiver — and while the team may have addressed it through the draft, it’s unclear if the rookies can fill that role right away.
Bottom line: Green Bay now faces a delicate situation. Managing so many wideouts, looming contract issues, and rising expectations could stir plenty of drama — and that’s good news for the Lions as they aim to stay on top in the NFC North.
