Lindor and Alonso Bring the Heat as Mets Barely Escape Diamondbacks’ Late Comeback

Informal rewrite:
The Mets pulled off a nail-biter in Arizona Monday night, thanks to big home runs from Francisco Lindor and Pete Alonso. Lindor smacked a three-run blast in the seventh, while Alonso had already crushed a two-run shot earlier in the fourth—his 10th of the season. That gave New York what seemed like a comfy 5-1 lead.

But things got dicey fast. Dedniel Núñez, just back from injury and making his season debut, walked the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth. Suddenly, it was a full-on jam. Reed Garrett came in and managed to get two outs, but not before the D-backs scored three to make it 5-4.

In the ninth, Arizona almost tied it up again after an error by Alonso let Alek Thomas reach base. But Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez, with a slick tag from Lindor, nailed Thomas trying to steal. Closer Edwin Díaz finished the job with two more outs for his eighth save of the year.

On the mound, Griffin Canning earned the win, his fifth straight—something no Mets pitcher has done since Zack Wheeler back in 2018.

Next up: Mets send David Peterson to the mound Tuesday to face Arizona’s Zac Gallen.
