Let’s be honest—Aidan Hutchinson can’t do it all by himself.
Ever since the Lions got bounced from the playoffs by Washington, it’s been clear their defense needs help, especially on the line. Injuries piled up, including Hutchinson’s, and by the time the postseason rolled around, the defense just couldn’t keep up.
Now, Hutchinson is expected to be ready for Week 1 after breaking his leg early last season. But the front line around him hasn’t seen much improvement. Sure, they drafted Ahmad Hassanein, who could turn out to be a hidden gem—but that’s a big “if,” especially early on.
And just to be clear, the Lions aren’t going after Trey Hendrickson either, who was probably their only realistic option until now.
Then, out of nowhere, Carolina released veteran pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney. Suddenly, Detroit has a golden opportunity.
Clowney’s 32 now, but he still brings the heat. He had 5.5 sacks and 46 tackles last year, and not too long ago (2023), he racked up 9.5 sacks with Baltimore. He may not be in his prime anymore, but he’s exactly the kind of experienced presence that could lighten Hutchinson’s load and boost the entire D-line.
Think Za’Darius Smith-type impact—but maybe more affordable and more available.
And here’s the kicker: the Lions have over $39 million in cap space. So if they’re not 100% sold on Hassanein being ready out the gate, they need to pick up the phone and make Clowney their guy—before someone else does.
