Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford Could Be Done in L.A. Sooner Than Expected

Even though he hasn’t worn Honolulu blue since 2020, former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is still a name that gets attention in Detroit. He gave us everything he had for over a decade, and while Jared Goff is the guy now, it’s hard not to check in on Stafford like you would an old friend—or maybe an ex you’re still rooting for.

Now 37, Stafford is back with the Los Angeles Rams for what might be his final run. He signed a two-year deal worth $8.4 million this offseason, but some NFL analysts believe his days as a starter could be numbered. Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon recently listed the Rams among the teams most likely to move on from their current QB situation sooner rather than later.

Gagnon noted that while Stafford is returning for 2025, the Rams might not see enough value in keeping a high-priced veteran whose play has dipped a bit in recent years. Stafford’s passer rating since 2022 is a modest 91.8, and with the team in transition, the idea of drafting or developing a new face of the franchise is gaining steam.

Meanwhile, Stafford continues to have fans in the media. On The Herd, Colin Cowherd went so far as to say Stafford could eventually be viewed as greater than Aaron Rodgers—especially if he wins another Super Bowl. It’s a bold take, but one that shows Stafford still gets respect for what he brings to the table.

Whether or not this is Stafford’s last ride, Lions fans will be watching. He gave Detroit everything he had—and some still believe he deserves one more shot at greatness.
