Mets Considering Bold Move to Replace Pete Alonso
The New York Mets are cooking up some intriguing plans this offseason. While they could re-sign Pete Alonso, one insider hinted they’re seriously looking at an unconventional option: three-time All-Star Luis Arraez.
After a busy couple of months that included signing two new pitchers, re-upping Sean Manaea, and snagging Yankees superstar Juan Soto on the biggest contract in sports history, the Mets still have one major decision to make—what to do about Alonso.
The fans want him back, but giving a big contract to a 30-year-old first baseman is risky. Negotiations haven’t gone smoothly, though the Mets do have a decent shot since there’s not a huge market for Alonso. Even so, the team is reportedly eyeing Luis Arraez as a backup plan.
Arraez, a two-time batting champ, doesn’t pack Alonso’s power but is a top-tier hitter with a knack for getting on base. His 2024 stats include a .318 batting average, 4 home runs, and 41 RBIs. Though he’s not a first baseman by trade, his leadoff abilities could fit nicely in front of stars like Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto.
Still, there’s a catch. Arraez is under contract with the Padres for one more year, and San Diego is dealing with some internal drama, which could make trade talks tricky.
Whether it’s Alonso or Arraez, the Mets’ choice will shape their 2025 season—and keep fans on the edge of their seats.
