Even with some offseason shakeups, the Detroit Lions are heading into the 2025 NFL season with one of the strongest rosters in the league.
NFL.com recently ranked the most complete teams in the NFL, and the Lions came in at No. 3—trailing only the Eagles and Ravens. That’s high praise for a team that has spent the last few years building brick by brick under general manager Brad Holmes.
Much of Detroit’s offseason focus was on beefing up the defense. Their big splash in free agency was signing cornerback D.J. Reed, and they added more firepower in the draft with first-round defensive tackle Tyleik Williams. They’re also set to welcome back several key players from injury, including pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson.
“The Lions added talent at every level of the defense,” wrote NFL.com’s Eric Edholm. “And getting Hutchinson back healthy will make a big difference.”
On offense, the Lions are stacked. Jared Goff returns at quarterback, and he’ll have plenty of weapons to work with—Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Sam LaPorta, and explosive running back Jahmyr Gibbs, just to name a few. Even with a new offensive coordinator in John Morton, Detroit’s offensive core remains intact and dangerous.
The only real questions? Who wins the left guard job, and who steps up opposite Hutchinson on the edge? Outside of those spots, the roster looks ready to compete for a Super Bowl.
NFL.com also noted that the Lions may be forced to let go of some talented players when rosters are trimmed in August—another sign of how deep this team has become.
