Fresh Start in the Big Easy: DPJ Already Making Plays for the Saints

After a forgettable stint with the Detroit Lions, wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones is making the most of his fresh start with the New Orleans Saints.

The 26-year-old Detroit native signed with the Saints earlier this month, and he’s already catching attention during OTAs. Peoples-Jones hauled in a touchdown on a vertical route from rookie quarterback Tyler Shough, according to Ross Jackson of the Locked on Saints podcast. Not bad for a guy who had to earn his spot on the 90-man roster through a rookie minicamp tryout.

It’s a good sign for DPJ, who has a tough battle ahead to crack the Saints’ final 53-man roster. New Orleans has a few proven weapons like Chris Olave, Brandin Cooks, and Rashid Shaheed, but the rest of the wide receiver depth chart is wide open — and Peoples-Jones is taking advantage.

Lions fans remember his time in Detroit as underwhelming. After coming over in a midseason trade with the Browns in 2023, expectations were high, but he only logged five catches for 58 yards across eight games. He didn’t make the final cut in 2024 either, spending the season on the practice squad.

Now, he’s getting another shot to prove himself — and so far, he’s doing just that. The Big Easy might be exactly the opportunity he needed to turn things around.
