The Detroit Lions have gone from rebuilding to real contenders in just a few short years, thanks in large part to the fiery leadership of head coach Dan Campbell and GM Brad Holmes. Two straight division titles and an NFC Championship appearance later, the Lions are no longer sneaking up on anyone — and the NFL schedule makers clearly noticed.
Detroit is staring down one of the toughest roads in the league this season. The Lions will square off twice with each NFC North rival (all of whom are looking stronger), while also taking on heavyweight opponents like the Chiefs, Rams, Bucs, and the full slates from both the NFC East and AFC North. According to strength-of-schedule rankings, Detroit is tied with the Bears for the second-hardest schedule in the NFL, behind only the New York Giants.
But Dan Campbell isn’t running from it. He’s embracing it.
“It’s awesome, man,” Campbell said. “By the end of the year, we ought to be just scarred up. Hardened for battle and ready for the playoffs. There’ll be nothing easy about it, but it’s the right kind of brutal.”
That’s classic Campbell — a guy who once talked about biting kneecaps now wants his squad battle-tested by December. And frankly, after losing both coordinators to head coaching jobs, dealing with playoff heartbreak, and playing in what could be the deepest division in football, the Lions are going to need every bit of that toughness.
The path won’t be easy, but the blueprint is clear. If Jared Goff stays sharp, Aidan Hutchinson stays healthy, Jameson Williams finally breaks out, and the secondary shows real growth, this team has the pieces to handle the gauntlet ahead.
Campbell and the Lions aren’t shying away from the challenge. They’re charging straight into it, starting Week 1 with a trip to Lambeau Field to face the Packers. Ready or not, the battle begins this fall.
