Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff isn’t expecting the offense to hit the brakes in 2025—if anything, he says it’s getting a tune-up.
With Ben Johnson now coaching the rival Chicago Bears, John Morton steps in as the Lions’ new offensive coordinator. Despite the change, Goff assured reporters that the offense isn’t taking a step back—in fact, fans should expect some fresh “wrinkles” this season.
“No, of course not,” Goff said when asked if things would slow down. “We’re trying to get better, learn from our mistakes, and grow from last year. Even if Ben was still here, we’d still be adding new stuff. But John definitely has his own flavor, and he’s doing a great job.”
Goff explained that while some things will stay the same, the team is also working through new communication styles and concepts. Getting everyone on the same page is the main challenge, but so far, it’s been a good one.
Morton brings familiarity, having worked with Goff back in 2022 before spending time with the Rams. That connection could prove valuable as the Lions look to build off last season’s offensive success, where Goff ranked second in passing yards (4,629) and fourth in touchdowns (37). PFF ranked him as the seventh-best passer over the last two seasons.
The Lions aren’t short on weapons, either—Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jameson Williams, and Jahmyr Gibbs are just a few of the playmakers Morton can get creative with.
Detroit opens the season September 7th against Green Bay. Don’t be surprised if Goff and the offense come out looking sharper—and a little more unpredictable.
