Lions Swap Rookie for Ex-Giants Cornerback Divaad Wilson

The Detroit Lions made a roster tweak on Monday, moving on from rookie cornerback Gavin Holmes and bringing in a more experienced option in Divaad Wilson, who most recently spent time with the New York Giants.

Holmes was part of the Lions’ group of undrafted free agents signed ahead of rookie minicamp. Coming out of Wake Forest and Texas, he was the only corner in that batch and had reportedly landed a three-year, nearly $3 million deal with Detroit. But before even finishing Organized Team Activities (OTAs), the Lions decided to go in a different direction.

Enter Divaad Wilson.

The 25-year-old has bounced around a bit since going undrafted in 2023. He first signed with Jacksonville, then moved to the Cardinals’ practice squad and was eventually picked up by the Giants. He’s appeared in seven NFL games total, making one start and logging 10 tackles along with a pass deflection.

While Wilson isn’t a household name, he brings some in-game experience to a young and competitive defensive backfield in Detroit. With training camp on the horizon, he’ll have a shot to carve out a role—especially if he can stand out on special teams or in sub-packages.

As for Holmes, his time in Detroit was brief, but there’s always a chance another team gives the young corner a look as the preseason roster churn continues.
