Ryan Grubb Names Alabama QB He Believes Is ‘Probably’ the Best Pure Thrower

Offensive coordinator sheds light on Austin Mack’s arm talent and the Crimson Tide’s evolving QB picture

Simpson Leads for Now, But Mack Turns Heads

The Alabama Crimson Tide may have a quarterback frontrunner heading into fall, but offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb made it clear this week that the competition is anything but closed. In a recent interview with Ryan Fowler on Tide 100.9, Grubb offered insight into a room full of capable arms—and singled out one for special praise.

“He’s probably the best pure thrower of the football,” Grubb said Thursday when speaking about redshirt sophomore Austin Mack, who followed Grubb and head coach Kalen DeBoer from Washington to Tuscaloosa. Despite limited game action, Mack’s precision and fluid mechanics have made a strong impression on Alabama’s new play-caller.

A Familiar Face With Untapped Potential

Though Mack appeared in only one game last season, tossing a touchdown before taking a redshirt year, his familiarity with the offensive system stands out. Grubb and Mack worked closely together during their time at Washington, and that established rapport may give the sophomore an edge as the Tide look to refine their passing game under a new regime.

“Nick [Sheridan] has knowledge of the system,” Grubb added, referring to Alabama’s quarterbacks coach and last year’s offensive coordinator. “He’s been integral in bringing continuity and helping every guy in the room develop.”

Mack’s decision to stay in Tuscaloosa through the spring transfer window further solidifies his intent to compete. And while experience may not be on his side, raw talent and system familiarity certainly are.

Simpson Still QB1—for Now

Ty Simpson remains the favorite to start Week 1 against Western Kentucky on August 30. Grubb was candid when asked who would lead the offense if the season started today: “He is [still ahead] right now,” he said of Simpson. “We don’t really deal in absolutes [until] we have to.”

Simpson’s advantage comes from in-game experience and a strong spring showing, but Grubb left the door open for change. With a quarterback room that includes true freshman Keelon Russell and the ultra-talented Mack, the coaching staff has options—and a real battle ahead of fall camp.

A Different Tide Under DeBoer and Grubb

As Alabama transitions into a new era without Nick Saban, the team’s offensive identity is in flux. Grubb, fresh off a stint as the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator, is bringing NFL-level structure and tempo back to college football. And with DeBoer at the helm, the quarterback position is more competitive than ever.

Whether Simpson retains his top spot or Mack’s arm talent forces the issue, one thing is clear: Alabama is stacked at quarterback, and Grubb’s belief in Mack’s natural throwing ability has added a fascinating twist to the race.
