How Frenkie de Jong Could Help Barcelona to Sign Nico Williams

A gesture of goodwill from Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong could be decisive in helping the club secure the signing of Nico Williams this summer.
According to Diario Sport, De Jong is currently in contract renewal talks with Barcelona, aiming to extend his deal from its current 2026 expiry to the summer of 2029.
During these negotiations, De Jong was asked if he would once again defer his salary, something he previously agreed to during the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially, there was resistance from his representatives, but De Jong has now taken personal control of the discussions.
Reports indicate that an agreement is now close, with De Jong agreeing to defer part of his salary for next season. This move would create the financial flexibility needed to facilitate the signing of Athletic Club winger Nico Williams.
“Barça seem to have managed to structure the new contract by deferring some amounts, which will mean generating a salary margin that could be key to the signing of Nico Williams,” reports Sport.
