The Detroit Lions still haven’t solved one of their biggest offseason needs: finding a reliable second defensive end. Despite multiple options in free agency and ongoing speculation, the team hasn’t pulled the trigger on a move. Recently, some predictions suggested the Lions might wait until the 2025 trade deadline, but a new mock draft says help could take even longer.
Pro Football Network’s Joe DeLeone projected in his early 2026 NFL mock draft that the Lions will select Miami Hurricanes edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. in the first round. Bain burst onto the scene as the ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2023, totaling 7.5 sacks, 44 tackles, and three forced fumbles. However, he regressed last season, managing just 3.5 sacks and 23 tackles.
The Lions’ need at edge rusher could become even more urgent next offseason. Veteran Marcus Davenport is only signed for one year, and Josh Paschal is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Without reinforcements, Detroit’s depth on the edge could go from thin to critical by 2026.
For Bain, a strong 2025 season is key to rebuilding his draft stock. If he can bounce back, he could become the ideal addition for a Lions team that might desperately need a pass rusher by the time the 2026 draft rolls around.
