Netflix Teases Goff’s Emotional Lions Arrival—The Real Story’s More Complicated

Netflix just dropped the trailer for Quarterback Season 2, and Jared Goff gets emotional, claiming his trade to the Detroit Lions was the first time he “truly felt wanted.” But does that line up with the facts?

Goff was drafted first overall by the Rams in 2016 after they spent a fortune trading up. His rookie struggles led the Rams to fire Jeff Fisher and hire Sean McVay, who brought in Dan Orlovsky to teach Goff NFL basics. The investment paid off initially, with Goff leading the Rams to a Super Bowl and earning a massive contract extension.

But Goff regressed badly after getting paid. The Rams parted ways with him in 2021, sending Goff and a haul of picks to Detroit for Matthew Stafford. Contrary to the emotional Netflix edit, Detroit didn’t trade for Goff—they took him to get out from under his contract while helping the Rams land Stafford.

Goff has found moments of success in Detroit, but he’s still inconsistent. He’s shown flashes, but cracks appear in big games—just like with the Rams. Dan Campbell and GM Brad Holmes didn’t commit to him as their franchise QB immediately, and doubts remain whether Goff can lead the Lions to a Super Bowl.

It’s easy for Netflix to spin an underdog story, but NFL reality is harsher. Goff wasn’t cast aside without help; the Rams poured resources into him until he failed to meet expectations. Now, in Detroit, he has another chance—but it’ll take more than feeling “wanted” to bring a championship to the Motor City.
