Nathaniel Lowe delivered a clutch three-run triple in the seventh inning to help the Washington Nationals surge past the American League-leading Detroit Tigers 9-4 in the second game of a doubleheader on Wednesday, securing a split after dropping the opener.
With the score tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Lowe came to the plate with the bases loaded and drove a line drive into the right-center gap, clearing the bases and electrifying the Nationals Park crowd. The hit was part of a five-run inning that broke the game wide open for Washington.
“Just trying to stay in the moment and look for a pitch I could drive,” Lowe said postgame. “Thankfully I got one over the plate and was able to do something with it.”
The Tigers, who won the first game of the twin bill 5-2 behind strong pitching from rookie ace Jackson Jobe, looked poised to sweep until the Nationals’ bats came alive late in Game 2. Washington’s bullpen also stepped up, tossing three scoreless innings to seal the win.
Nationals starter Mitchell Parker gave up four runs over six innings but hung in long enough to keep his team within reach. Kyle Finnegan (3-2) earned the win in relief.
The loss snapped a four-game win streak for Detroit, who still holds the best record in the American League.
“It’s a tough way to end the day, but credit to them — they came up with the big hit when it mattered,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said.
Lowe finished the second game 2-for-4 with three RBIs, marking one of his most impactful performances of the season. CJ Abrams and Luis García Jr. each added two hits and scored a pair of runs for the Nationals.
The Nationals, still rebuilding but showing flashes of promise, improved to 40-45 with the victory. Detroit fell to 49-34.
The two teams will wrap up their series Thursday afternoon before both head into the weekend with crucial division matchups on the horizon.
