Williams’ Speed and Separation Make Him Goff’s Favorite Target Ahead of 2025 Season

Jameson Williams is heading into a pivotal season with the Detroit Lions—and he’s already turning heads before training camp kicks off. The 2025 campaign will be a big one for Williams, who’s eyeing a contract extension. And if he can come close to repeating his 2024 performance—over 1,000 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 91 targets—he’ll be in line for a major payday.

The Lions, meanwhile, are pushing deeper into their Super Bowl window with a new offensive coordinator, John Morton. That means fresh plays, creative looks, and new ways to get the ball into the hands of stars like Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, David Montgomery—and of course, Williams.

According to Lions team reporter Tim Twentyman, Williams has been electric in minicamp. He’s been showing off his trademark speed and ability to separate, torching cornerbacks and connecting consistently with quarterback Jared Goff.

“We already know what Williams brings to this offense with his deep-threat ability,” Twentyman wrote, pointing to Williams’ five catches of 50+ yards last year and his impressive 17-yard-per-catch average. But it’s Williams’ ability to slam on the brakes, cut back, and create space on intermediate routes that’s been the real eye-opener. “How do defenders cover that when they have to respect his speed?” Twentyman asked.

He described a play where Williams skillfully navigated the middle of the field, dodging linebackers and finding open space for a clutch first-down catch on third down—exactly the kind of savvy that can elevate him to WR1 status.

Twentyman also noted that Morton seems focused on designing plays to get Williams into open space, something that will force defenses to pick their poison between him and St. Brown—bad news for anyone facing Detroit this fall.

With his contract situation looming and a new offense built to showcase him, Jameson Williams could be on the verge of a true breakout as the Lions’ top receiving option. Fans should be thrilled about what’s coming.
