AJ Hinch Admits He’s a Fan of Tigers’ Under-the-Radar Standout

Detroit Tigers manager AJ Hinch made it clear he’s more than just impressed with one of his players — he’s officially in the “fan club.” During a recent interview, Hinch heaped praise on utilityman Zach McKinstry, who has quietly become a vital part of the Tigers’ roster this season.

“He’s been huge for us,” Hinch said. “I’m in his fan club. He does a lot of things that don’t always show up on the stat sheet but are incredibly important to our team.”

McKinstry, who joined the Tigers last season, has emerged as a steady presence on both sides of the ball. His defensive versatility — playing everywhere from second base to the outfield — and timely hitting have provided Detroit with the depth it desperately needed.

While stars like Riley Greene and Tarik Skubal have dominated the headlines, Hinch emphasized that players like McKinstry are often the glue that holds a team together.

“Guys like him make managers look good,” Hinch added with a grin. “He’s always ready, he plays the game the right way, and he gives us options. It’s hard to overstate his value.”

With the Tigers fighting to stay in the AL Central race, Hinch’s admiration underscores just how critical McKinstry’s contributions have been — even if they fly under the radar for many fans.
