The Chicago Bears are hoping a fresh start under new head coach Ben Johnson, the former Detroit Lions offensive coordinator, will help turn things around after a disappointing 5-12 season. But while the offense shows promise, the defense remains a glaring concern — especially when it comes to stopping the run and pressuring opposing quarterbacks.
Last season, the Bears were one of the NFL’s worst run defenses, giving up 136.6 rushing yards per game (fifth-worst in the league). Their pass defense wasn’t much better, sitting squarely in the middle of the pack at 217.9 passing yards allowed per game. Despite solid pieces like Dayo Odeyingbo and Montez Sweat, the Bears’ pass rush needs significant help.
NFL insider Albert Breer predicts Chicago could look to free agency for answers — and he points to a familiar face: former Lions standout Za’Darius Smith. Breer noted the Bears might evaluate their current talent during training camp, but if they’re not satisfied, they could quickly move to sign Smith or other veteran edge rushers like Matthew Judon.
Smith, 32, notched nine sacks between stints with the Lions and Browns in 2024 before Detroit released him in March. Despite his proven production, he remains unsigned, which could open the door for the Bears to scoop him up. Given his track record and leadership, Smith would be an immediate upgrade and could bring much-needed firepower to Chicago’s defensive front.
New Bears defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard will have a close eye on the defense during camp, knowing bolstering the pass rush must be a top priority if the team hopes to compete in the NFC North.
If the Bears see early struggles, don’t be surprised if they pick up the phone and try to bring Smith back to the division — this time wearing navy and orange.
