Why T.J. Watt’s Mega Deal Could Complicate Lions’ Future Plans

Pittsburgh Steelers star pass-rusher T.J. Watt wants to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL. Frustrated with his current deal, Watt skipped mandatory minicamp and, according to reports, feels undervalued by the team.

CBS Sports’ Aditi Kinkhabwala recently explained that the Steelers’ attitude has caused friction. “T.J. Watt was told, ‘You’re lucky to be a Steeler,’ and he responded, ‘You’re lucky to have me,’” she said, highlighting how Pittsburgh expects players to take discounts out of loyalty to the team.

If Watt signs a deal that resets the market for edge rushers, it could have a ripple effect on the Detroit Lions. Their star defensive end, Aidan Hutchinson, is expected to command a massive payday when it’s time for his extension. The price tag for elite pass-rushers has already skyrocketed after deals for Maxx Crosby and Myles Garrett.

NFL insider Tom Pelissero told Rich Eisen that Watt’s new contract, if completed before the season opener on Sept. 8, will likely set a new bar for pass-rusher salaries. “It’s going to be big money,” Pelissero said. “We’re probably going to see the edge market reset again.”

Former Lions lineman Jon Jansen has suggested that Hutchinson should wait until next offseason to maximize his value. However, it may be smarter for Detroit to act now and sign him long-term before his price climbs even higher. With multiple young stars eventually needing extensions, GM Brad Holmes could face serious cap challenges if Hutchinson’s deal balloons alongside the market.
